Gulls Bi-Weekly Report 5
By Thomas Harrington
The San Diego Gulls were supposed to play four games over the past two weeks, but unfortunately, one of them was postponed because of the ongoing pandemic. The AHL has yet to see a major pause the way the NHL has, and hopefully it won’t be needed.
In the three games played, the Gulls went 0-3-0, and the games weren’t particularly close. San Diego also named a new captain. With Sam Carrick in the NHL, possibly for good, the Gulls named Greg Pateryn as their new captain. Pateryn started the year with Anaheim before being assigned to the AHL, and has been a steady presence on San Diego’s blueline ever since.
Gulls Get Blanked By The Canucks
The Gulls’ first game was against the Abbotsford Canucks, San Diego’s first game against their new division opponents. Abbotsford opened the scoring just a few minutes into the game and made it 2-0 before the first was over. They then followed that up with a goal in both the second and third periods and won 4-0.
Josling Scores First Goal In Game Against Bakersfield
Next up, Bakersfield visited the Gulls. The game was scoreless through most of the first, but the Condors took the lead with less than 15 seconds to go in the 1st period. In the second period, they scored two more times to make it 3-0, but Sean Josling scored his first career AHL goal to get the Gulls on the board and make it 3-1. In the third, Bakersfield scored two more times to win 5-1.
Gulls Lose On Teddy Bear Toss Night
The San Jose Barracuda were up next, and it was teddy bear toss night for the Gulls. Neither team scored in the first, but Benoit-Olivier Groulx scored his first of the season late in the second to make the teddy bears come raining down. Unfortunately, that was the high point for the Gulls, as San Jose scored four unanswered goals in the third period to win 4-1. Their final game was supposed to be against Stockton tonight, but that was postponed and a new date for that contest has yet to be announced.
Final Thoughts
The Gulls were supposed to play four four games over the next two weeks, however, the first game has been postponed because of the pandemic and a new date has yet to be announced. Hopefully, they will still be able to play the next three games, starting with starting with Henderson visiting San Diego. The Gulls will then hit the road and travel to Tucson for a pair of games.
After their winning streak to close out November, San Diego has struggled in December, winning just one game out of seven. They’ve dropped back to the bottom of the Pacific Division. The good news is that if they can win three in a row, they’ll be back to .500 on the season, and right in the middle of the divisional standings. But the Gulls need to turn their season around quickly, or a playoff spot will slip away from them.
