VIDEO: Terry “Flys” Ducks Past Philly

Photo: USA Today

By Michael Walters

The Anaheim Ducks returned home to host the Philadelphia Flyers. The Ducks were without Ryan Getzlaf, Derek Grant, Nicolas Deslauriers, and Trevor Zegras who were all in the COVID protocol. Sam Carrick was also feeling ill(non-COVID) and couldn’t go in this one. The Flyers also had several players in the protocol as well.

Bryce Kindopp made his NHL debut and Danny O’Regan made his Anaheim debut. John Gibson was in net against Carter Hart.

Recap

The Ducks would score first in this one. Hampus Lindholm would rip a shot that bounced in and out of the net so fast, it wasn’t called a goal at first. Upon review it was clear the puck crossed the goal line and then defected back out. It was later determined that Troy Terry got his stick on the puck, so he was credited with the goal.

Terry would then get the next goal for Anaheim. He would turn on the after burners at center ice and break in on net and backhand one in to make it 2-0.

Cam Atkinson would get the Flyers on the board at the end of period on a nice redirection.

The Flyers would get a breakaway chance early in the period, but Gibson made a big stop. Philadelphia had a few good chances in the middle frame, but couldn’t get one past Gibson.

Sonny Milano tried The Zegras during this period, but had no one in front to swing at the puck. He would score on the power play later in the period to give the Ducks a 3-1 lead after two periods. The Flyers challenged for goalie interference, but the refs held up the goal.

The Flyers would bring pressure in the third period, but Gibson answered every thing that was thrown his way. In the final minutes the Flyers would pull their goalie and Troy Terry would score to earn a hat trick and put this game away. Max Comtois made an unselfish play as he had a chance at the wide open net, but instead passed the puck to Terry.

Analysis (Stats Per Natural Stat Trick)

Despite being a shorthanded team and barely being able to fill a complete lineup, Anaheim found a way to win. Philadelphia was also down a few players as well.

The Ducks came out strong controlling the play and build a 2-0 lead quickly. Anaheim put up 19 shot attempts to 12 from Philadelphia. The Ducks also posted a 61.29 CF% and 58.33 FF% at even strength. A late goal did get the Flyers back into the game.

The Flyers had some momentum in the second period and created several quality scoring chances, but Gibson made many great saves. Milano’s late goal in the period nearly sealed the deal for the Ducks.

Give credit to Philadelphia as they didn’t give up in the third period. They cranked out 30 shot attempts and 15 were on net. Gibson was excellent in the third period stopping everything thrown his way. Overall great team effort by the Ducks who were without four of their starting centers.

Team Stats/News:

Terry earned his first career NHL hat trick. He is now third in goal scoring(21) behind Leon Draisaitl(25) and Alex Ovechkin(24). Terry has taken 83 shots on goal as opposed to 107 for Draisaitl and 159 for Ovechkin.

Terry has the best shooting percentage at 25.3% in the league for players with 80 or more shots on goal.
