What’s Next For Getzlaf?
By Mike Walters
Recently I had a chance to catch up with the newly retired Ryan Getzlaf. I asked the Ducks long standing captain how retirement life was treating him and he said he has been a “professional uber” as of a late. He has been driving his kids all over town to school, sports practices and games, and various other activities. He also said he has been doing some traveling lately and bought another house in Tennessee. I asked if he planned to move out there permanently and he said he wasn’t sure yet. He has been going back and forth as there hasn’t been a family decision to move out of California yet. He didn’t mention if he would have a future role with the Ducks or not, for now he is enjoying more free time with his family.
I also talked to several members of the Ducks and asked them who they thought would be the Ducks next captain. The players said there hasn’t been an official decision yet, but some of the names floating out there include Cam Fowler and Adam Henrique. Fowler would seem to be a logical choice as he is the longest tenured Duck on the team. Henrique would be a good mentor if he is chosen, though he is only signed through the 2023-24 season.
There have also been talks the team would go with three alternate captains for this season. Some of the players feel three alternates may be the way to go at least for this season until deciding on a captain for next year. Ultimately, General Manager Pat Verbeek and Head Coach Dallas Eakins will have to sit down and make a decision soon as the season is rapidly approaching.
Sam Carrick disclosed he had hip surgery during this off season. He said the surgery went well and he feels good, but he won’t be ready for opening night. He said he will start skating sometime in October. He played a solid bottom 6 role for Anaheim last season and he is looking to do so again this year.
It was fun being able to see the guys and overall there is a good vibe among the team. They feel really pumped up for this season to get started and are excited with all the new players who have joined the team. This team is looking to compete and the positivity is infectious.
Is it October yet?
