Prospect Update: Trevor Janicke
By Thomas Harrington
A fifth round pick from 2019, forward Trevor Janicke completed his junior year at the University of Notre Dame.
Janicke’s third year of NCAA hockey saw him put up career highs in games played, goals, assists, and points, with 15 goals and 24 points in 40 games. Notre Dame had a very well rounded offense last season. Janicke finished seventh in team scoring, but was four points back of the team leader. His 15 goals were second on the team, and he had a three-game goal scoring streak in January.
I had three expectations for Janicke last summer, and he hit all three of them. First, I wanted him to play in every game, which he accomplished. He more than met my second expectation when he increased his goals from four to 15 and his points from 10 to 24. My final expectation was for him to blossom as a shut-down center. Janicke had been playing wing but moved to center this past season and played very well in his new position, even seeing time as the defensive center when the opposition had the goaltender pulled.
Janicke will be back at the University of Notre Dame for his fourth and final season of NCAA hockey and I’ve got a few expectations for him. First, I want to see him set a new career high in points. I’m hoping for 30 but will be satisfied with him having his best offensive season in college. Second, for him to continue to evolve and get better at playing center. Finally, for him to sign his entry-level deal with Anaheim when his season is over, and depending on when that happens, for him to join the Gulls on an ATO to finish the season off.
There aren’t a ton of fifth round picks in the NHL, and it remains to be seen if Janicke will join them or not. If he does, he’s still got a couple of years before he gets there. He’s got another year in college, and then at least two years in San Diego before he might get a chance in Anaheim. So I think he’s three or more years away from making his NHL debut, if he gets there.
Janicke is currently unsigned and Anaheim has control of his rights until next August. The plan seems to have been all along for him to spend all four years in college, and that’s exactly what’s going to happen. He’s progressed nicely in his three years at Notre Dame, but I think he’ll need a strong final season of NCAA hockey for Anaheim to sign him once the year is over.
The next prospect update will be on Jacob Perreault.
