Ducks Fall Short In New York

By Michael Walters

The Anaheim Ducks started their road trip in the Big Apple. The Ducks went with the same lineup they had in their last game against San Jose. Lukas Dostal was in net against Jonathan Quick.

Recap

The Rangers got the first power play about seven minutes into this one. Mason McTavish was called for hooking. New York did not convert with the extra man and there was no scoring in the first period. The Rangers out shot the Ducks 18 to 7.

In the middle frame, the Ducks got a power play with just over five minutes to go in the period. Anaheim did not convert and there was still no scoring in the second period. Anaheim outshot New York 15 to 8.

The Rangers scored the first goal of the contest just over four minutes into the third period. Ryan Lindgren scored on a one-timer from the slot. Will Cuylle would then score to make it appear to be a 2-0 lead, but the Ducks challenged the play for being offside. The play was reviewed and the goal was disallowed for being offside. Cuylle would then score about three minutes later and his goal was again reviewed. It appeared that he kicked the puck into the net, but the refs still ruled it was a good goal.

About a minute later Olen Zellweger scored on a redirection to get the Ducks on the board and back within one goal. With just over three minutes to go, Cam Fowler nearly tied the game on a wraparound attempt, but Quick was able to get to the post and keep the puck out. The Ducks pulled Dostal in the final minutes, but couldn’t get the tying score. Anaheim dropped this one by a 2-1 final.

Analysis:

This game was a story of two different Anaheim teams. In the first half of this game the Ducks were out shot 24 to 12 and had a difficult time generate many quality scoring chances. In the second half, the Ducks looked more dangerous and out shot New York 21 to 8. The Ducks could have easily scored more than one goal, but Quick played a solid game in net. Overall the Ducks posted a CF% of 44.04% and FF% of 45.57% at even strength and need to be more consistent in generating offense.

In regard to the second New York goal, NHL Rule 37.4 defines what constitutes a “distinct kicking motion”.

A “distinct kicking motion,” for purposes of Video Review, is one where the video makes clear that an attacking Player has deliberately propelled the puck with a kick of his foot or skate and the puck subsequently enters the net. A goal cannot be scored on a play where an attacking Player propels the puck with his skate into the net (even by means of a subsequent deflection off of another Player) using a “distinct kicking motion.”

The original call on the ice was a goal and upon review it was upheld. There appeared to be doubt as to whether the puck was directed in or deflected in by the refs and as a result the goal was allowed to stand. It was a tough break for Anaheim. If the goal had been overturned, then there is a chance the Ducks could have gone to overtime and earned at least a point.

Team Notes/Stats:

Troy Terry earned an assist on Zellweger’s goal and now has a six game point streak.

The Ducks travel to New Jersey tomorrow to play the Devils at 4 PM.
