By Michael Walters
The Anaheim Ducks continued their road trip in New York against the Islanders. Tristan Luneau was a healthy scratch and Jackson LaCombe drew back in. Lukas Dostal was in net against Ilya Sorokin.
Recap
The Ducks got a power play with just under 8 minutes to go in the opening period and they converted. Leo Carlsson deflected a Frank Vatrano shot into the net. The Islanders outshot the Ducks 13 to 9, but Anaheim held a 1-0 lead after 20 minutes of play.
In the middle frame the Islanders got two power plays in the first half of the period, but were unable to convert on either man advantage. The Ducks went on the power play with about 7 minutes to go and scored to make it 2-0. Troy Terry scored from in close after receiving a pass from Mason McTavish along the goal line. The Ducks held a 2-0 advantage after two periods.
Early in the third period, the Ducks were called for back-to-back penalties giving New York a two man advantage for about a minute. The Islanders pulled within one with a goal by Mathew Barzel while on the man advantage. The Ducks held onto the one goal late into the game and the Islanders pulled their goalie. Vatrano scored an empty net and Anaheim won by a 3-1 final.
Analysis:
Head Coach Greg Cronin changed up the lines(maybe he listened to our podcast), which included putting Trevor Zegras with Cutter Gauthier and Alex Killorn on the third line. The Ducks still had difficulty at even strength play posting a CF of 37.96% and FF of 34.67%. The Islanders also put up 67 shot attempts to 41 for the Ducks. Anaheim did a good job defensively keeping New York for generating many quality scoring chances.
The key in this contest was the special teams battle which the Anaheim Ducks won. The Ducks scored on their first two power plays and went 2-for-3 on the night. The Islanders converted just once in four man advantages.
Dostal was also amazing again in net. He stopped 40 of 41 shots on goal for New York. He is 4-2-1 on the season with a 2.00 GAA and a SV% of .943%.
Team News/Stats:
Terry’s goal was his 100th in his career as a Duck. He joined the likes of Corey Perry (372), Paul Kariya (300), Ryan Getzlaf (282), Rickard Rakell (154) and Bobby Ryan (147) who also scored 100+ goals and were drafted by Anaheim. Terry’s game point streak was extended to eight games.
