Teuvo Teravainen scored on a one timer from the right circle to make it 2-0. Chicago held a a two goal lead after the first period.
The Ducks had a power play chance early in the second period and another one halfway through the frame, but they could not convert on either one. With just under three minutes to go, Chicago went on a power play and Seth Jones scored on a one timer to make it 3-0. In the next sequence, Ross Johnston and Pat Maroon dropped the gloves and briefly fought before each getting five minutes for fighting. Chicago held a commanding 3-0 lead after two periods.
The Ducks got on the board hallway through the third period. Brock McGinn took a wrist shot, which Soderbloom got a piece of, but the puck slid past him and just over the goal line. Ryan Donato then scored for Chicago to make it 4-1 with just over two minutes to go. The Ducks got a power play in the final minutes of the game and Mason McTavish scored from the side of the net. The Ducks ended up losing by a 4-2 final score.
Analysis
The Ducks started the game out well controlling the puck and outshooting the Blackhawks 11-2 just over halfway through the first period. Once Chicago got the first goal though, then they carried the momentum outshooting Anaheim 9-3 for the remainder of the period. The Ducks were nearly even with shots on goal in the second period and then almost doubled up Chicago in the third period.
Anaheim did play well during even strength play generating 71 shot attempts with 19 of being high danger chances. Chicago had 36 shot attempts and just 8 high danger chances. The Ducks posted a CF of 66.36% and FF of 61.04%. Anaheim had plenty of quality scoring chances in this contest, but they couldn’t cash in most of the time.
The special teams play did them no favors in this contest. Chicago had two power plays and converted on both of them. Anaheim had five power plays, but only converted on the last one when the game was almost over. Dostal also didn’t have a great night and probably wanted a few of those goals back, but he still stopped quality chances especially Bedard on a breakaway. The Ducks as a whole can’t keep leaning on him so much.
