Ducks Double Up The Blue Jackets
By Michael Walters
The Anaheim Ducks continued their homestand against the Columbus Blue Jackets. John Gibson made his season debut in net after missing the opening month as he recovered from his appendix surgery. Daniil Tarasov got the nod in net for Columbus.
Recap
Brett Leason scored just three minutes into this contest to give Anaheim the early 1-0 lead. Cutter Gauthier had the puck at the side of the net and found Leason in front for the tap in score.
The Blue Jackets answered late in the period on the power play. Yegor Chinakhov scored on a one timer from the right circle. The teams were tied at one apiece at the end of the opening period.
Jackson LaCombe put the Ducks back up by a goal early in the second period. He got to a rebound after Radko Gudas‘ point shot was blocked. The Blue Jackets got a power play with about seven minutes to go in the period, but couldn’t convert. Anaheim held a 2-1 advantage heading into the third period.
Leo Carlsson extended the Ducks lead to two goals halfway through the third period. He scored on a one-timer in slot from Brian Dumoulin. Columbus pulled back within one once again on a goal by Kirill Marchenko with just about three minutes to go. The Blue Jackets pulled their goalie in the final minutes and Isac Lundestrom scored into the empty net to salt this one away. Anaheim won by a 4-2 final.
Analysis
All around a good effort by the Ducks to get the win. An early goal to start the game gave Anaheim momentum. Another quick score in the middle frame helped as well. The Ducks outscored the Blue Jackets 3 to 1 during even strength play. Their fourth goal came with Columbus’ net being empty.
Columbus did put up 79 shot attempts and 40 shots on goal. Anaheim put up 50 shot attempts and 30 shots on goal. The Ducks had to rely on their goaltending once again and Gibson didn’t disappoint. He made 38 saves and faced 14 high dangerous chances by Columbus. Outside of the goal by Marchenko, Gibson was damn near perfect in net.
The role players helped with the Anaheim offense as Leason, LaCombe, and Lundestrom scored. All the Ducks players with last names starting with an “L” helped hand an “L” to Columbus. Carlsson got his fifth goal of the season and is tied with Terry for the team lead. Gauthier still hasn’t scored, but he did pick up his fifth assist which is second best on the team.
Team News/Notes:
Cam Fowler (upper-body) took the ice for warmups, but missed his second game.
Mason McTavish also did not play due to some tightness.
