San Diego Gulls Bi-Weekly Report 12

Photo: SD Gulls

By Thomas Harrington

The San Diego Gulls played six games over the previous two weeks and had a record of 4-2, including a three-game win streak at home to finish things off. Injuries in Anaheim and San Diego have really hurt the Gulls, but a couple of defensive prospects who joined them have made a big impact. Sasha Pastujov didn’t play for the entire month of March but will hopefully return before the season ends, while Nathan Gaucher has missed the last several games and will unfortunately miss the rest of the season.

The Barracuda Shutout The Gulls

The Gulls started out on the road, visiting the San Jose Barracuda. San Jose struck twice in the first, once in the second, and scored an empty net goal in the third to win 4-0.

The Gulls Earn A Split Against The Silver Knights

San Diego flipped the script in their next game as they traveled to Henderson to face the Silver Knights. Nico Myatovic scored with 15 seconds left in the first period, and Carsen Twarynski scored his first goal as a member of the Gulls in the second. Myatovic also scored his second of the game in the middle frame, and Judd Caulfield scored into the empty net to give San Diego a 4-0 win. This was the first career AHL game for both defensemen Stian Solberg and Ian Moore.

San Diego stayed in Henderson to face the Silver Knights for a second straight game. Henderson scored the only goal of the first, but Twarynski tied the game 25 seconds into the second period. Solberg picked up his first career assist on this goal. The Silver Knights retook the lead but Yegor Sidorov tied the game back up. In the third, Henderson scored two powerplay goals and won 4-2.

The Gulls Edge The Barracuda

The Gulls then returned home to host San Jose. The Barracuda scored first but Roland McKeown tied the game and Moore got his first assist on this goal. San Jose retook the lead in the second, but Ryan Carpenter and Jan Mysak both scored to put the Gulls on top. Moore picked up his second assist of the night on Mysak’s goal. The Barracuda scored the only goal of the third period, forcing overtime. In the extra session, Twarynski scored to give San Diego a 4-3 win.

Moore and Solberg Score Their First Career AHL Goals; Gulls Winning Streak Hits 3

The Gulls stayed at home for two more games, first hosting the Tucson Roadrunners. Neither team scored in the first period, but Moore scored his first career AHL goal in the second. In the third, San Diego ran away with the game, as Tristan Luneau scored, and then Justin Bailey found the back of the net twice to make it 4-0. Tucson got one back on the powerplay late, but Caulfield scored into the empty net and San Diego won 5-1.

The Gulls finished with the Calgary Wranglers visiting San Diego. Calgary scored the only goal of the first but Myatovic tied the game in the second. In the third, Solberg scored his first career AHL goal, and McKeown scored on the powerplay and San Diego won 3-1.

The Gulls will play five games over the next two weeks. They’ll start out at home by hosting the Abbotsford Canucks. San Diego will then hit the road for the next four games: two stops in Iowa, then a trip to Bakersfield, and finishing in Coachella Valley.

Hopefully Anaheim doesn’t need any more help at forward, but if they do, Mysak, Sidorov, and Bailey make the most sense based on who is still healthy. On defense, if Jacob Trouba misses any time, then Luneau is the player most likely called up. He not only leads the Gulls in assists, but the entire team in points. The Ducks could also consider signing Moore to his entry-level deal and giving him some NHL games, similar to what they did with Sam Colangelo last year.

The Gulls recent play of late has put them back into the playoff picture, but they are still a long shot to make it. There are only eight games left in the season, and San Diego will likely need to go at least 6-2 to have a shot at getting in. Even with that record, they’ll still probably need help and for the teams they are chasing to hit a rough patch to end the season.
