Prospect Update: Maxim Masse
By Thomas Harrington
Drafted by the Anaheim Ducks in the third round of the 2024 NHL Entry Draft, forward Maxim Masse completed his third season in the QMJHL, playing for the Chicoutimi Sagueneens. For the second straight season he was one of the team’s alternate captains.
Despite playing in 20 fewer games, Masse nearly matched his goal total from the 2023-2024 season where he scored 36 goals in 67 games. This past season, he scored 33 goals and 59 points in 47 games. He injured his ankle early in the season and missed over a month of action. Despite missing so much time, he still led Chicoutimi in goals and finished second in points. In the playoffs, Masse played in 11 games and scored two goals and eight points. Chicoutimi fell to Rimouski, fellow Anaheim prospect Alexandre Blais’s team, in six games. Masse finished second in assists and tied for second in points on Chicoutimi in the playoffs.
Masse is a skilled forward with a very good shot. However, he’s more than just an offensive force as he also plays on Chicoutimi’s penalty kill unit and causes havoc around the opposing net. He does need to work on his skating, but if he makes it to the NHL, it will probably be as a second or third line forward who can be used in any situation.
Masse will be back in the QMJHL for what will likely be his final season of junior hockey. Masse was good this past season; now he needs to put together a dominant junior season before he turns pro. I have a few expectations for him. First is just staying healthy and playing a full season. Second, for him to finish top 10 in the QMJHL in both goals and points, something he likely would have done last year if he’d played in more games. Finally, if his season ends early enough and San Diego is still playing, for him to join the Gulls and make his professional hockey debut.
Masse is still a few years away from the NHL. He’s got another year of juniors ahead of him and then likely a year or two in the AHL. So the earliest I think we could see him in an Anaheim sweater is the 2028-2029 season, and it wouldn’t surprise me if that didn’t happen until the season after that.
Masse is currently unsigned, and the Ducks control his rights until June 2026. He could sign his entry-level contract before the season begins. If it doesn’t happen then, as long as Masse has a strong season, he should be signed before the deadline.
The next prospect update will be on forward Alexandre Blais.
