Prospect Update: Austin Burnevik

By Thomas Harrington

Drafted by the Anaheim Ducks in the sixth round of the 2024 NHL Entry Draft, winger Austin Burnevik completed his freshman season at St. Cloud State University and also played for Team USA at the World Junior Championships.

Burnevik played in 35 games for St. Cloud State and scored 13 goals and 28 points. He led the team in both goals and points, and finished tied for second in assists. He ranked tied for 85th in goals in the NCAA. He was named the NCHC Rookie of the week twice: once in October when he scored three goals and five points in two games, and once in November when he scored three goals in two games. Burnevik never went more than two games without a point, and had a four-game point streak twice. He also launched over 100 shots on net and scored six goals on the powerplay. Burnevik was named to the NCHC All-Rookie team at the conclusion of the season.

At the World Juniors, he played in all seven games for the gold medal winning US squad. He was scoreless in the tournament, playing primarily on the fourth line, but did see some time on the team’s second powerplay unit. Given his age, this tournament will be Burnevik’s only appearance at the World Juniors.

Burnevik is a big winger who needs to work on his skating. He’s constantly pushing himself and isn’t afraid to go to the net. Burnevik isn’t one of Anaheim’s most skilled prospects, but the skill he does have combined with his size makes him an intriguing prospect to watch in the years to come.

Burnevik should be returning to St. Cloud State for his sophomore year next season. With a year of college hockey under his belt, I have two expectations for Burnevik this coming season. First, for him to once again be one of St. Cloud State’s leading scorers. He doesn’t need to lead the team in every statistical category, but he does need to be near the top of every offensive statistic for them. Second, for Burnevik to establish career highs in goals, assists, and points. He had a very strong freshman season and he needs to be even better next year. If he can get close to 20 goals and hit 30 points, that will be a successful season for him.

Burnevik probably has two to three years of college hockey ahead of him before looking to turn pro. Once he does, there’s a chance he could make his NHL debut soon after that, similar to what Ian Moore did this past season and Sam Colangelo the season before that. However, even if that happens, I still think he’ll spend most of the following season in the AHL. So while he could make his NHL debut in a few years, I think he’ll be looking for a full time roster spot in four to five years.

Burnevik is currently unsigned and the Ducks control his rights until August 2028, giving him and Anaheim plenty of time to figure out what his future will hold. If he can build off of a very successful freshman season over the next two to three years, the Ducks should sign him. However, if his game regresses in that time, they’ll probably let him leave as a free agent in 2028.

The next prospect update will be on forward Coulson Pitre.
