Ducks Make Third Round Of Roster Cuts
By Thomas Harrington
Yesterday the Anaheim Ducks announced their next round of roster cuts, sending several players to the AHL. Three of these players had already been assigned to San Diego previously: Nathan Gaucher, Yegor Sidorov, and Calle Clang were all recalled to play in the preseason game against San Jose before being reassigned back to the Gulls. The other players assigned were defensemen Tyson Hinds, Tristan Luneau, and Stian Solberg.
Gaucher unfortunately missed the game against San Jose with a minor injury and was held out as a precaution. Sidorov played 13:35 and scored Anaheim’s first empty net goal of the game against San Jose. Clang started and played the entire game, stopping 26 of 28 shots, picking up the win, and looking very comfortable in net.
Hinds is a third round pick from the 2021 NHL Entry Draft. He has played in four preseason games, tied for the most among rookie blueliners, and scored a goal and three points. He’s a veteran of two AHL campaigns. Anaheim has a strong group of young defensemen, and Hinds has been one of the standouts in the preseason so far. He was called up to the NHL last year but didn’t play in any games, but I believe he will this season. However, he’ll still likely spend most of the year in San Diego.
Luneau is a second round pick from the 2022 NHL Entry Draft. He appeared in four preseason games and recorded one assist. Luneau being assigned to the AHL now is actually a bit of a disappointment for him. Each of the last two seasons he’s played well enough in the preseason to make Anaheim’s opening night roster and start the year in the NHL. He got seven games with the Ducks two years ago and six games with the Ducks last year. Despite being sent down so early, I firmly believe he’ll be back up in Anaheim, possibly for a majority of the season.
Solberg is a first round pick from the 2024 NHL Entry Draft. He played in two games at the rookie tournament and recorded two assists. Solberg has appeared in three preseason games but failed to record any points. It’s not surprising to see him sent to the AHL; given his age, it was expected. He has a chance to make his NHL debut this season, but I think he’s less likely to be called back up than Hinds or Luneau.
With just one preseason game left and the start of the season next week, Anaheim’s opening night roster is quickly taking shape. As of right now, there are only seven defensemen the Ducks are carrying, meaning Ian Moore has likely made the roster out of training camp. Anaheim still has 17 forwards at training camp, meaning more cuts will be coming amongst that group, as well as one more goaltender, as either Ville Husso or Petr Mrazek will be heading down to San Diego.
