San Diego Gulls Biweekly Report 6

The San Diego Gulls played four games over the past two weeks and had a record of 3-1-0-0, putting them firmly in seventh in the Pacific Division, the final playoff spot in the division. The Gulls are only a few points out of second in the division, but also only a few points out eighth. The Pacific is incredibly tight and the Gulls will need to have more two-week stretches like this one to maintain their hold on a playoff spot.

The Gulls started things off with a trip to Bakersfield to face the Condors. Ryan Carpenter opened the scoring less than three minutes into the game, but the Condors responded with a goal of their own a minute later. San Diego then responded with two more goals to close out the period, scored by Jan Mysak and Justin Bailey. Stian Solberg was the only player to find the back of the net in the second period, but Bakersfield responded with a goal of their own halfway through the third. Nico Myatovic then finished the game off, with a shorthanded, empty net goal, giving the Gulls a 5-2 victory.

San Diego then returned home to host the Abbotsford Canucks. Neither team scored in the first, but Tim Washe gave the Gulls the lead in the second. In the third, Judd Caulfield scored his 10th of the season and Sam Colangelo finished things off with an empty net goal, giving San Diego a 3-0 win. Calle Clang stopped all 15 shots he faced for his first career AHL shutout.

To finish off 2025, the Gulls traveled to Tucson to play the Roadrunners. Tucson opened the scoring in the first, and then scored two more goals in the second to give them a 3-0 lead. In the third, the comeback started with Mysak scoring less than three minutes into the period. Matthew Phillips and Sasha Pastujov then scored less than two minutes apart to tie the game. Neither team could score again in regulation and the game went to overtime. In the extra session, Washe scored the winner, giving San Diego a 4-3 overtime win.

To start off 2026, San Diego returned home to host the Coachella Valley Firebirds. Coachella Valley scored the first two goals of the game before Bailey and Carpenter both scored to tie the game at 2-2. The Firebirds scored the only goal of the second, and then scored two more times in the third, including an empty net goal, to win 5-2. Roland McKeown picked up an assist on Bailey’s goal, his 200th career AHL point.

The Gulls made a couple of roster moves this weekend. Defensemen Roman Kinal and Konnor Smith were both reassigned to the Tulsa Oilers. Defenseman Nikolas Brouillard returned from his loan with Team Canada to play in the Spengler Cup.

San Diego will play six games over the next two weeks. They’ll start out at home, hosting the San Jose Barracuda. The Gulls will then travel to Colorado to face the Eagles for a pair of games, before returning home for three straight games. San Diego will face Abbotsford twice, and then Coachella Valley in those three games.

All season long, Pastujov and Mysak have formed a dynamic duo on San Diego’s second line. While neither are the Gulls’ best forward, both have been playing well lately. While it’s unlikely, it would be fun to see them get called up together and play on the same line for the Ducks. Other players who could get called up include Washe, Caulfield, Tristan Luneau, and Tyson Hinds.

The next two-week stretch will play a big factor in San Diego’s playoff chances. Colorado is currently leading the Pacific Division, and is a team the Gulls need to show they can play well against. Coachella Valley and San Jose are both within striking distance for San Diego to pass. The only weak team the Gulls will face is Abbotsford, who are currently last in the division. However, the Canucks are a team that San Diego cannot take lightly, as those are wins the Gulls have to get if they want to stay in the playoff race.
