Ducks Rally Past Flames In Overtime

The Anaheim Ducks continued their road in Calgary against the Flames. Lukas Dostal was in net against Dustin Wolf. The Ducks rolled with the same lineup.

The Flames took a 2-0 in the opening period scoring twice just over a minute apart.  Mikael Backlund took a shot that was stopped by Dostal and Jonathan Huberdeau tried to score on the rebound. Jackson LaCombe was able to clear Huberdeau away from the net, but his skate knocked the puck into the net by accident. Huberdeau got credit for the goal.

Hunter Brzustewicz then made it 2-0. He tried to send a cross-ice pass to Joel Farabee, which LaCombe tried to intercept, but he unintentionally deflected the puck into his own net.

Beckett Sennecke scored twice in the second period to tie the game up at two. In the opening minutes of the period Alex Killorn made a pass to Sennecke in the right face-off circle, who one-timed it glove side past Wolf.

Sennecke then scored on a 3-on-2 rush with just over seven minutes left in the period. Mikael Granlund found Sennecke at the left post and he was able to score before Wolf could get to the post.

Matthew Coronato scored in the opening minutes of the third period on the power play to make it a 3-2 contest. He scored in close near the left post.

Chris Kreider then scored with about seven minutes left. He scored on a one-timer from a pass by Ryan Poehling during a 2-on-1 rush.

The teams were tied at three at the end of regulation and bonus hockey was needed to determine a winner. In the extra session, Sennecke skated in on a 2-on-1 and beat Wolf glove side from the right face-off circle for the win.

Analysis:

The way this game started out it looked bleak for Anaheim. They got down 2-0 early on a pair of unlucky goals. LaCombe had a rough start as both goals were scored off of him. But then the Beckett Sennecke show arrived in the second period getting two goals bringing the Ducks back into this one. Calgary did go ahead once more in the third, but Kreider answered. Then Sennecke scored the game winner in overtime, completing the hat trick and comeback.

The Flames dominated the first period putting 17 shots on net and the Ducks were only able to manage three. Anaheim played better after the first period putting 14 shots on net in the second and third period combined. The Flames up 17 shots in the second and third.

Dostal continues to play amazing. The stat sheet will show he stopped 32 of 35 shots, but he really only let one goal in. The first two goals were unlucky own goals by LaCombe.

And how about Sennecke? He has been on absolute fire lately. He singlehandedly got Anaheim back in this game in the second period and then he scored the game winner in overtime. He is now tied with Leo Carlsson with 18 goals on season. Only Cutter Gauthier has more goals(23) on the team.

Team Notes/Stats from NHL PR:

Sennecke (52 GP) became the third-fastest Ducks rookie to 40 points in a season trailing Bobby Ryan (46 GP in 2008-09) and Trevor Zegras (50 GP in 2021-22).

Sennecke tied Leo Carlsson (2) for the most multi-goal games as a teenager in Ducks history.

Sennecke (19 years, 362 days) became the fourth rookie in Ducks history to record a hat trick and second youngest behind Leo Carlsson (18 years, 319 days on Nov. 10, 2023).

Sennecke became the ninth rookie in NHL history to record a hat trick which included an overtime goal. The only active players to do so are Elias Pettersson (Jan. 2, 2019), Patrik Laine (Oct. 19, 2016), Jordan Staal (Feb. 10, 2007) and Alex Ovechkin (Jan. 13, 2006).

Sennecke recorded the third hat trick by a teenager this season (also 2 by Macklin Celebrini). The last campaign to feature as many hat tricks by teenagers was 2017-18 (3).

Sennecke (19 years, 362 days) became the fourth-youngest Ducks player to score an overtime goal, joining Cam Fowler (19 years, 68 days & 19 years, 108 days), Jamie Drysdale (19 years, 193 days) and Leo Carlsson (19 years, 295 days).

The Ducks earned their league-leading seventh multi-goal comeback win this season.
