Gulls Biweekly Report 10
By Thomas Harrington
The San Diego Gulls played six games over the past two weeks and had a record of 2-1-2-1. Because of how the AHL’s point system works, the Gulls still managed to pick up seven points in those six games, but San Diego needs to be playing better than two wins every two weeks. The Gulls currently sit in sixth place in the Pacific Division, but a better two-week stretch would easily put them in the top five of the division, with a shot at third or fourth place.
San Diego started out by hosting the San Jose Barracuda. Roland McKeown opened the scoring less than two minutes into the contest and Justin Bailey made it 2-0 late in the first. In the second, San Jose responded with two goals of their own to tie the game, and took the lead early in the third period. Ryan Carpenter tied the game with five seconds left in regulation. The game went to overtime and then a shootout, where the Gulls scored once and the Barracuda scored twice, giving them a 4-3 win. The Gulls then traveled to Rockford for a pair of games. The IceHogs opened the scoring just 30 seconds into the first game, but Sasha Pastujov tied the game five minutes later. Rockford scored two quick goals late in the period, but Carpenter scored with less than 30 seconds remaining in the opening frame to make it a 3-2 game. In the second, Stian Solberg tied the game for the Gulls. In the final period, Rockford retook the lead, before Pastujov scored his second of the night to tie the game. Solberg then scored his second of the night to give the Gulls the lead and eventual 5-4 win. It was the first two-goal game of Solberg’s career.
The second game against the IceHogs was a much lower scoring affair, as neither team found the back of the net in the first period. Nathan Gaucher put the Gulls on the board just over a minute into the second period, but Rockford tied the game before the period ended. Late in the third, the IceHogs scored the only goal of the period and won 2-1. San Diego then returned home to face the Tucson Roadrunners, one of the teams chasing them in the standings. Neither team scored in the first but Carpenter made it 1-0 in the second. Tucson scored the only goal of the third period to tie the game and send it to overtime. In the extra session, the Roadrunners scored and won 2-1.
The Gulls finished things off with a pair of games in Texas against the Stars. In the first game, Texas opened the scoring early in the second period. Gaucher tied the game a couple of minutes later. In the third, Bailey scored the only goal and San Diego won 2-1. The second game against the Stars was a bit of a barn burner. Sam Colangelo opened the scoring just two minutes into the contest, but Texas scored to tie the game. Tyson Hinds put the Gulls back on top late in the first. In the second, the Stars tied the game early, but Nikolas Brouillard and Yegor Sidorov both scored to make it a 4-2 game. All three goals came within the first seven minutes of the period. Texas scored one more time late in the period to make it a one-goal game. In the third, the Stars tied the game and then scored again to take the lead. Brouillard scored his second of the night to tie the game at 5-5 and send the contest into overtime. In overtime, Texas scored and won 6-5.
San Diego will play six games over the next two weeks. They’ll start on the road, taking on San Jose. They’ll then return home to host the Rockford IceHogs for a pair of games. The Gulls will then travel back to San Jose for another game against the Barracuda, before returning home to host the Colorado Eagles for a pair of games.
Right now, there’s no one on the Gulls really tearing it up, pushing for a spot with the Ducks. With Tim Washe and Ian Moore already in Anaheim, and the trade deadline coming up on Friday, it’s unlikely anyone will be recalled before then. However, it will be very interesting to see what both the Ducks and Gulls look like once the deadline has passed.
The Gulls didn’t have a great two-week stretch, but the good news is that they are still in a solid playoff position and control their own destiny. A spot in the Calder Cup Playoffs is far from guaranteed, but it’s definitely within reach. However, in order to get there, they will definitely need to improve their play over the past two weeks and stop giving up leads to the opposition.
