Ducks Fly By The Jets
By Michael Walters
The Anaheim Ducks started their road trip in Winnipeg against the Jets. Lukas Dostal was in net against Connor Hellebuyck.
There was no scoring in the first period.
The Jets scored first in the opening minutes of the second period. Morgan Barron tipped a point shot past Dostal.
The Ducks then answered back with three goals in less than two minutes of play. Tim Washe got to a rebound and tapped it home before Hellebuyck could recover. Ryan Poehling then scored 14 seconds later as he tipped a shot past Hellebuyck. Alex Killorn then scored with a quick shot beating Hellebuyck stick side. Anaheim led 3-1 after two periods.
The Jets had a power play in the opening moments of the third period, but couldn’t convert. They also had a very abbreviated one later in the period and again didn’t cash in. The Jets pulled their goalie with just over three minutes to go and Jackson LaCombe scored. The Ducks went on to win 4-1.
Analysis:
The Ducks did give up the first goal again, which has been a recent trend, but then they rattled off three straight goals en route to another win. I discussed on the recent podcast the desire to see more complete games from Anaheim and they delivered tonight. The Ducks held the Jets to just two shots on goal in the first period and 13 total on the night. Anaheim put up 35 shots on goal.
The Ducks dominated the puck possession at even strength with a CF% of 61.54% and a FF% of 65.22%. Anaheim made 56 shot attempts to 35 for Winnipeg. The Ducks generated 12 high danger chances to 8 for the Jets. The Ducks did a better job of taking shots in close while at the same time keeping the Jets shots towards the boards.
Special teams wasn’t a factor in this contest. The Ducks had two power plays and did not convert. The Jets technically had three power plays and also did not convert.
It was good to see the Ducks get depth scoring from their forwards with goals from Washe, Poehling, and Killorn. LaCombe along with Peohling and Killorn each had two points in this contest. Overall, a great team effort and team win by everyone.
Team Notes/Stats:
The Ducks are 21-0-0 when leading after two periods this season.
Vegas lost tonight so Anaheim has a three point lead over them for first place.
Ross Johnston was injured in the third and did not finish the game.
What’s Next?
The Ducks travel to Toronto to play the Leafs at 4 PM.
