Ducks Comeback Falls Short In Edmonton
By Michael Walters
The Anaheim Ducks continued their road trip in Edmonton against Oilers. Lukas Dostal was in net against Connor Ingram. Radko Gudas and Pavel Mintyukov were both out with lower-body injuries. Troy Terry did return to the lineup.
There was no scoring in the first period.
Connor McDavid scored about eight minutes into the second period. He scored on a backhand shot in close in front of the net. Edmonton led 1-0 after two periods.
The Oilers scored twice early in the third period to make it a 3-0 lead. Jack Roslovic scored five-hole on the rush to make it 2-0. Just over a minute later Matthew Savoie got a tap in goal on an odd man rush to make it 3-0.
The Ducks got on the board about 40 seconds later when Beckett Sennecke redirected a shot in front past Ingram.
About three minutes later Jeffrey Viel made a nice backhand pass from behind the net to Cutter Gauthier and he scored in front to pull the Ducks within one.
Anaheim pulled Dostal in the final minutes, but Edmonton scored an empty net goal and won 4-2.
Analysis:
The Ducks gave up the first goal once again and found themselves down 3-0 early in the third period. They tried to rally, but didn’t have enough magic to complete the comeback. Anaheim played a decent opening road period, but then played awful in the second period only getting three shots on net. Edmonton pulled away to start the third with a pair of goals. Anaheim did fight back and nearly tied the game several times, but ultimately fell short losing 4-2.
Edmonton did a good job, especially in the second period, of clogging up the neutral zone and limiting Anaheim’s chances. The Oilers had 18 blocked shots in this contest.
Both teams had three power play chances and neither team converted. The Ducks had been hot on the power play recently, but couldn’t get much going in this contest.
The Ducks have been the comeback kings as of late, but when you are down 3-0 early in the third period that is a tall order for any team to rally from. Anaheim can’t keep relying on coming from behind if they want to make a serious push in the playoffs. This game was a huge missed opportunity for Anaheim. If they don’t win the Pacific Division, then this will be a game to look back at and wonder what if.
Team Notes/Stats:
John Carlson has 8 assists in 7 games played with Anaheim. That’s the most ever by a player through their first 7 games with Anaheim.
Cutter Gauthier scored his team leading 37 goal. The last time a player scored that many goals in a season was during the 2013-14 season when Corey Perry scored 43.
What’s Next?
The Ducks will host the Toronto Maple Leafs on Monday at 7 PM.
