Rights To Gudas Traded To Florida For Rights To A.J. Greer
By Michael Walters
The Anaheim Ducks announced today they traded the rights to Radko Gudas to Florida in exchange for the rights to A.J. Greer.
Gudas was acquired in free agency during July of 2023. He played in 203 games in over three seasons with Anaheim. He registered 47 total points (9 G + 38 A). He played in 56 regular games and missed the playoffs due to an ankle injury. He served as the Anaheim captain for the last two years. He will return to the Florida Panthers where he played three seasons before coming to Anaheim.
Greer spent the last two seasons with the Florida Panthers, winning the Stanley Cup during the 2024-25 season. He played in 159 games with Florida and registered 49 total points (23 G + 26 A). His previous contract was a two year deal with an AAV of $850k. He also played for Colorado, New Jersey, Boston, and Calgary. He has played 326 total regular season games registering 81 total points (36 G + 45 A).
Analysis:
Once again General Manager Pat Verbeek was able to trade the rights of player and get a return. Verbeek just traded John Carlson‘s rights to Carolina. Assuming Greer signs with Anaheim, this is a good trade as the Ducks got something instead of just letting Gudas walk. Gudas had two solid seasons with Anaheim, but then injuries slowed him down the second half of last season. This isn’t the greatest trade, but at least Verbeek got something out of nothing once again.
Greer had his best offensive season last year scoring 17 goals and putting up 15 assists. He was averaging over 12 minutes of ice time with the injuries that Florida had to deal with. He averaged just over 9 minutes of playing time in his last three years and averaged just under six goals. He brings a gritty style of play and will bring depth scoring to the bottom six forward group of the Ducks once signed.
With Olen Zellweger, Carlson, and Gudas all gone now, Anaheim will still be looking to add to their blueline. It will be interesting to see what happens with Jacob Trouba. The Ducks do have the cap room, even once Leo Carlsson and Cutter Gauthier are re-signed, to potentially bring back Trouba. They also could use their cap space for another trade or free agency signing as well.
With Gudas gone, the big question for Anaheim is who will be the next captain?
