Prospect Update: Lasse Boelius

The Anaheim Ducks selected defenseman Lasse Boelius in the second round of the 2025 NHL Entry Draft, 60th overall. He played his first full season in the Liiga for Assat this past season, while also suiting up for Team Finland at the World Junior Tournament.

Boelius played in 40 games for Assat, scoring a goal and eight points. Among Assat defensemen, Boelius finished tied for seventh in points, but likely would have been higher if he’d played the full season. Unfortunately he suffered a season-ending injury in early February and missed the rest of the season and the playoff run.

Boelius played in all seven games for Finland at the World Juniors, scoring two goals and seven points, leading Finland’s blue line in goals and points. In the entire tournament, the only defensemen who finished with more points than Boelius were Zayne Parekh and Tomas Galvas. Overall, it was a strong tournament for Boelius. He used his size effectively and jumped into the play to help keep the play alive. Finland finished fourth in the tournament.

The World Juniors were the first time I saw Boelius play, and the first thing I noticed about him was his size. He’s listed at 6’1”, but he was one of the larger players on the ice at the tournament. Boelius is a good skater, but will need to improve that skill if he wants to make it to the NHL someday. He has good offensive instincts and does a good job of jumping into the play.

Boelius has another year left on his contract with Assat and should be back with them in the Liiga this coming season. I have a few expectations for him this coming season. First, for him to stay healthy for the entire year. Missing significant time can really impact a young player’s career, but hopefully he can bounce back from that injury this year. Second, for him to finish in the top five among defensive scoring on Assat. Finally, for him to play for Finland at the World Juniors again and have an even better tournament.

Boelius is still a number of years away from the NHL. He’s got at least one more year with Assat, and there’s a chance he could sign another contract and stay in Liiga or another European league after that. When he’s ready, Boelius will come to North America and join the Gulls in San Diego. There, how quickly he adapts to the North American game will determine how soon he gets a shot in the NHL. So the earliest I think we could see him in the NHL is the 2028-2029 season, but probably after that.

Boelius is currently unsigned by the Ducks. According to PuckPedica, the Ducks have until June 2029 to sign him to an entry-level deal, giving both sides ample time to decide when he should be signed. While I don’t expect Boelius to be signed before this coming season, if he shows huge growth with Assat, then I could see him getting signed next summer and coming to North America for the 2027-2028 season to play in San Diego.
