Prospect Update: Michael Callow

The Anaheim Ducks drafted forward Michael Callow in the fifth round of the 2022 NHL Entry Draft, 154th overall. He played his third season of NCAA hockey for Harvard University this past season.

Callow’s junior year didn’t start out well for him. He missed several games in the first half of the season with an injury and being a healthy scratch; he only appeared in 16 games total. Callow only played in three of Harvard’s first 12 games of the season. Overall, he scored three goals, matching his career high from the two previous seasons, and seven points. If he’d played in 30 games, he likely would have set career highs in goals, and maybe even in assists and points too. Callow didn’t record any points until late February, but that was the start of a six-game point streak, and he finished the season with points in seven of the final eight games.

I had two expectations for Callow and he missed both, primarily because of how many games he missed. First, I wanted him to set career highs in goals, assists, and points. His career high in points is 15, set in his freshman year, and he only managed half of that this past season, though it was also in half the number of games. Second, I wanted him to finish in the top five of Harvard’s scorers. Harvard usually isn’t known as an offensive juggernaut, and if he’d recorded 18 points, he would have been tied for fifth on the team in scoring.

Callow will be back at Harvard for his fourth and final season of NCAA hockey, and will be one of the team’s two captains. In his final year of college hockey I have two expectations for him. First, for him to play a full season. Hopefully missing so much time last year won’t have a big impact on his development going forward. Second, I want him to set career highs in goals and points.

Callow is a long way from making it to the NHL. He’s got another year of college hockey ahead of him. Once it’s complete, and if he signs an entry-level deal, he’ll turn pro and either go to the AHL or ECHL. If he starts in the AHL and plays well for the Gulls, I could see him getting called up to Anaheim after two or three years. If he starts in the ECHL, I’d push that timeline back by at least a year, if not more, since he’ll need to first work his way to the AHL before trying to impress enough to get called up to Anaheim. So it’s possible we see him in the NHL in the next three or four years, but it could also be longer than that.

Callow is currently unsigned, and the Ducks control his rights until after his college career ends. If he has a strong senior year, Anaheim will likely sign him and have him join the Gulls on an ATO to end the year, similar to what Roger McQueen did this past season. However, if his offensive numbers stay low or he misses significant time, the Ducks will likely decide to not sign him and let him become a free agent in August 2027. At that point, San Diego may try to sign him to an AHL-only deal, or he could seek employment elsewhere to continue his hockey career.
