Prospect Update: Alexandre Blais

The Anaheim Ducks drafted forward Alexandre Blais in the fourth round of the 2024 NHL Entry Draft, 100th overall. After playing in the QMJHL for several years, Blais moved to the NCAA this past season and played for the University of Connecticut. He played with fellow Anaheim prospect Anthony Allain-Samake.

Blais had a solid first season of college hockey, scoring six goals and 19 points in 38 games. He finished fourth in assists and tied for sixth in points with his new team. He recorded his first two points in his second career NCAA game, a goal and assist. He recorded two points in a game on two other occasions, and had a season high four-game point streak in late November. Blais helped Connecticut reach the NCAA tournament for the second time ever.

I had two expectations for Blais from last summer, but he missed both. First, I knew that his scoring would fall in going from the QMJHL to the NCAA. The QMJHL is known as a high-scoring league; the NCAA is not. Still, I was hoping he’d average somewhat close to a point per game. Instead, he averaged a point per every other game. Second, I wanted him to finish top three in assists and points on his new team. He wasn’t far off in assists. In fact, with one more, he would have tied for third on the team in assists, but he would have needed eight more points to finish tied for third on the team in scoring.

Blais should be back at the University of Connecticut for his sophomore season. With a season of college hockey under his belt, more will be expected out of Blais this coming year. First, I’d like to see him set career highs in goals, assists, and points. Blais has good offensive talents and those need to be on display more this coming season. Second, for him to play in a majority of Connecticut’s games this season. Finally, for him to finish in the top five on the team in scoring and top three in assists.

Blais is still a number of years away from the NHL. With at least another season or two of college hockey ahead of him, he’ll undoubtedly spend time in the AHL after that before he gets a chance in the NHL. So the soonest we could see him in an Anaheim uniform is the 2028-2029 season, and quite possibly a year or two after that.

Blais is currently unsigned, and per Puckpedia, Anaheim controls his rights until June 2028. He has two more seasons of college hockey in which to earn himself an entry-level contract. He had a good but not great first season, and if he can improve from there over the next two seasons, I expect the Ducks to sign him.
