Prospect Update: Anthony Allain-Samake

The Anaheim Ducks drafted defenseman Anthony Allain-Samake in the sixth round of the 2025 NHL Entry Draft, 168th overall. He was a freshman at the University of Connecticut this past season, playing with fellow Anaheim prospect Alexandre Blais.

Allain-Samake played in 38 games and scored a goal and 10 points. Among Connecticut defensemen, he ranked fourth in both assists and points, and everyone who finished ahead of the 18-year-old were in their 20s. Allain-Samake recorded his first career assist in his second career college game, and scored his lone goal of the season in mid-March. He picked up an assist in Connecticut’s final game of the season.

Allain-Samake was one of the youngest players taken in the draft last summer. He’s a creative player with the puck and a good skater, but he isn’t known for his offensive exploits. Defensively, Allain-Samake had 29 hits and 49 blocks. He’s still a young player who needs to work on most aspects of his game going forward.

Allain-Samake should be back at Connecticut for his sophomore campaign. As is the case with many freshmen, Allain-Samake was sheltered in his first year of college hockey. With that behind him, more will be expected out of him in his sophomore campaign. I have three expectations for him this season. First, for him to once again play in most of Connecticut’s games. Playing in every game as a freshman is a great sign, and that needs to continue in his sophomore year. Second, for him to set career highs in goals and points. Third, for him to finish top three among Connecticut’s defensemen in assists and points. Even though he’s not known for his offensive abilities, if he can become more well rounded offensively, he’ll be more likely to make it to the NHL.

Allain-Samake is still several years away from the NHL. I expect him to spend three, if not four years in the NCAA before turning pro. At that point, if he’s played well enough to earn an entry-level deal, then he’ll head for the AHL or ECHL. Hopefully he’ll be good enough to join the Gulls, where he’ll probably spend at least a season or two. So I think the earliest we see him in the NHL isn’t until the 2031-2032 season, or later.

Allain-Samake is currently unsigned and the Ducks control his rights until August 2029, after the conclusion of his NCAA career. If he can have three more solid years of college hockey after a good freshman campaign, he should be signed to an entry-level contract. However, if his play stagnates at all, Anaheim could decide to let him become a free agent that summer.
