Player Review: Daniel Sprong

By: Aaron Francis

This past December, the Ducks completed a trade that sent defenseman Marcus Pettersson to Pittsburgh in exchange for forward Daniel Sprong. At the time the Ducks were struggling to score goals and were hoping that by adding Sprong, he would help the scoring depth and possibly even slot into the top six. With the Penguins Sprong had struggled to find a home, only registering 4 points in 16 games. After arriving in Anaheim, however, Sprong scored 14 goals and 5 assists for a total of 19 points in 47 games.

With all the Ducks scoring woes this season, Sprong’s 14 goals tied him with Ryan Getzlaf for 3rd in goal scoring on the team. Sprong showed moments of brilliance throughout the season, with his ability to score being his primary talent. In a year where many of Anaheim’s previous snipers such as Rickard Rakell and Corey Perry had trouble scoring at the same pace as previous seasons, having a depth forward like Sprong was huge help for the Ducks offense. At age 22, Sprong has much growing to do still as his defensive game isn’t the strongest and his scoring consistency could be better. Sprong found himself a healthy scratch a few times this past season and with more youth forward depth pushing their way up from San Diego, he’ll need to be on top of his game in order to keep his roster spot.

Ducks fans can look forward to an even stronger Daniel Sprong this coming season as a VIDEO posted recently showed some of his off-season training. Sprong will be an RFA this coming summer so that will also add to his motivation to have a great season in Anaheim starting this October. With all that said, I would expect that Sprong will reach 20-25 goals this coming season and hopefully round out his game with 17 assists or so for around 40 points. If he can manage that I think Sprong and the Ducks can consider it a good step in his development.
