VIDEO: Captain’s Chicken Coop
By Michael Walters
As many look for activities to keep busy given the current COVID-19 situation, NHL players are no different as they too look for ways to stay active.
While some players have been going for walks, runs, or even working out at home with personal gym equipment, Ryan Getzlaf has taken working out to a whole new level.
The Ducks captain built a chicken coop at his residence in Coto De Caza, which he showed off during a video conference call with San Jose’s Logan Couture, Vegas’ Marc-Andre Fleury and LA’s Anze Kopitar.
The Getzlaf household ran out of eggs recently and Paige Getzlaf ordered six chickens as a result. So Ryan had to build a coop in the backyard to accommodate their new guests. Getzlaf used tools, nails, and lumber to build it in over a period of three days.

Ryan did have a message for hockey fans towards the end of the conference call:
“We’re all kind of in the same boat with our fans,” he said. “Just wanted to reach out and say thanks for sticking by us. Hope to see you guys soon. Hope you’re taking care of your families and everybody is okay, and let you know we’re thinking about you, as well.”
He also had a message for the medical professionals at UCI:
“I wanted to do a quick shoutout to our medical team at UCI here that’s been working tirelessly and been doing such a great job. All the staff around this working the hospitals really putting themselves in danger when some of us are hunkered down at home, they’re helping take care of people and change the world really.”
