NHL Extends Self-Quarantine Period To April 30th
By Michael Walters
Today the NHL has announced an extension of the self-quarantine period for an additional 15 days until April 30th.
On March 12th, the NHL put the 2019-20 season on hold. There were still 189 regular-season games left to be played.
Originally players were to self-quarantine until Friday, March 27th which was then extended to Monday, April 6th. That was followed by another extension to April 15th. Today’s announcement is the third time the league had pushed back the self-quarantine period.

The regular season was to conclude on April 4th and the Stanely Cup Playoffs were slated to start on April 8th.
The NHL is still trying to finish the regular season in addition to the playoffs according to Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly. There have been talks of restarting the season during the summer at various neutral sites. One location that has been discussed is North Dakota.
The league is discussing various formats in order to award the Stanley Cup. One scenario would be to have the regular 16 team playoff format, while other ideas include expanding the number of teams to possibly 20 or more. The league would also like to have a full 82 game season for 2020-21.
