27 Years Ago Today: Selanne Scored 76 Goals As A Rookie

Photo: The Canadian Press/John Woods

By Michael Walters

On April 15th, 1993, Teemu Selanne became the first(and only) rookie to ever score 76 goals in a season. He broke the previous record which was held by Mike Bossy, who scored 53 goals back during the 1977-78 season.

The most goals Selanne scored in a season after his rookie year, would be the 1997-98 season with the Anaheim Mighty Ducks when he scored 52 goals. His third-best season was the previous year when he scored 51 goals with Anaheim. Selanne also scored 48 goals in the 2006-07 season when Anaheim went on to win the Stanley Cup.

Selanne holds several records and they say records are made to be broken, but this rookie record by Selanne is going to be very difficult to beat.

If you want to compare Selanne’s rookie numbers, then below is a look at the best rookie seasons in NHL history.

Last year Selanne released his book “My Life” in the English version. In case you missed it, he stopped by the podcast to talk about his book, his life, and more!
